Practice of Sedition
In a world built upon a foundation of conflict, the past year has been notably violent. As Crux Fidelis, the Crusaders and ruling faction of Sium, suffer heavy losses from a particularly bloody Aphelion, other factions are emboldened to take action. Despite being allies, Weltschmerz's ambitious and duplicitous nature sees them taking bigger risks which threaten to break their alliance. All the while, Apocrypha continues to gain public sympathy and support while the Black Sun Cabal and Poena Damni continue to wreak havoc. As Sium races towards yet another conflict, it’s evident that a war lurks on the horizon.

Quietly, a woman with haircut short and bleached white as a shade of a curse that resided just a day ago, was taking steps through crowds that were littered with broken glass, shame and sorrow. Flames shoot out of homes, men and woman tear through each other, gouge, scorn and just indulge in their dark desires thus further tying themselves down by the chains born from their own hearts. It was a dark time in history indeed.

Aphelion: the dark times and one of the many reasons why this one woman was so cynical towards sillage being brought into the world. Now was not the time for cynicism however, for unexpectedly, this woman has been given a golden opportunity. Now, donned in a silk white dress with a golden crown concealing her face, a Festerhilde takes the stage. Those who approached her, the Earth would carefully shove aside and restrain.

For now, Noa was on a search to find those who haven’t been affected by the eclipse and offer a place of refuge. A Molotov cocktail barrage rained down on Noa’s position but a giant slap of the Earth rose, turned to a massive shield of sand to collapse on the makeshift explosives before they glazed over. The newly formed glass had then been reshaped and was used to replace a few broken windows that caught Orcavont’s eye before she kept walking.

It wasn’t until Noa made it into the center of the town that she would stop walking and sat down, as an earthen dome would then surround her. With eyes closed, and her mind focused on her surroundings, clones made of brittle earth grew out of the ground and took off in search for the innocent, the broken and sickly. Regardless of what happens, the duty of a noble was never done.

Melchior wandered the streets of Ravanar, ethereal white hair and robes drenched in blood. He stared unblinkingly ahead and blank-faced as he stumbled with jerky, almost inhuman movements, waiting for his next opponent to reveal themselves. Jumbled thoughts plagued him even as a raving cultist fell back, leaving Melchior's outstretched hand coated in more of the macabre fluid. This was a night of killing, even for him. As a bellicosa, he wasn't effected by the black sun. What did guide him, however, was the excess of demonic activity and general corruption he'd been exposed to thus far. Not just the demons...he had to kill almost everyone he saw. The division between good and evil no longer existed. Everyone was bad. He couldn't save anyone...

Demons posed little to no threat to Melchior, and he saved every single one he saw...by killing them. But the humans -he could do nothing for them. He couldn't hit them, so he'd sustained several injuries when coming across them. He was forced to ignore them, running to the next demonic presence that came within range. Like everyone else, he mindlessly killed, and he would be lying if he said he didn't like it. Usually he couldn't do this -kill every demon he saw. Day by day he was forced to let them go on suffering because of human laws. But on this night, he had saved countless souls just in the span of a few hours. Mana would be delighted.

He sensed another demonic presence and made his way toward it at full-tilt. As he got closer, he could see his target was hidden inside some bulge in the earth. He didn't know what that was about, but he didn't care. Feeling an urgent burn in his chest, Melchior jumped high into the air, coming down on the dome with earth-shattering force, intending to break it and pursue the demon inside.

The earthen dolls all turned their heads at perfect synchronization at the sky, their sclera-less eyes gazing down on the force bearing down on the earth dome where their source resided. Fractures quickly formed on the service of the dome before it was torn asunder, and now debris fell down to the service. The rocks plummeted but only briefly for they immediately paused beneath the unwelcome intruder and formed a downward staircase for him down towards the presence of a Festerhilde who waited, ever-patient on her knees.

Time was of the essence. Noa needed to concentrate on the crumbled dolls in order to allow them to do their jobs. No normal individual would be able to pierce her barrier without the proper amount of power and weaponry. “Intermediate? No, slightly higher…” Festerhilde simply stroked her chin and waited for her guest to descend.

Aphelion was an issue even in Noa’s time of her youth, and during this time father and mother would keep her completely locked away in a comatose state until it passed over. It was now time for her guest to share that fate. “Dear, dear and here I thought I could work in peace and yet here you are – not restrained.” Those words echoed out throughout the inside of the dome. The dark was thick here, and even Noa wasn’t completely exempt from its effects.

So if she were to fight, she might not be able to hold back as much as she should. The best thing to do now was stall. As she stood up once more, Noa brushed some of the dirt off her dress and looked up. “I suppose nothing ever goes as planned no matter how much effort you put into it. Even me being here was an unexpected play from fate itself.” Perhaps Noa’s words were wasted or not but what was certain that she was in no mood for a meaningless scuffle.

Melchior was caught off-guard when the broken pieces of the dome stopped in midair, hanging there to form a makeshift staircase. Was the demon inviting him inside? He'd gladly take it, whether it was a trap or not. A heavy-looking broadsword appeared in his hand as he descended the stairs, steeling himself to cleanse this world of another demon. Was this sheer arrogance, or...?

Melchior was again surprised to find her kneeling there when he reached the bottom. Well, he couldn't clearly see the demon thanks to the darkness only slightly interrupted by the hole he'd made in the dome's roof, but just enough light reflected to show him a silhouette. Even in pitch-blackness, he would know she was there. He just had a feeling. He only gave a soft smile in response to the demon's comment that he wasn't restrained. He wasn't sure what she meant by that. Had he bypassed some sort of barrier on the way here? Really, it didn't matter.

"Fate is cruel, isn't it? Especially for you," he echoed back, sounding genuinely sympathetic. Given her lack of resistance thus far, he'd been led to believe that the demon was resigned to this fate until she stood. He wasn't surprised though. Demons were like this. They spent their whole life fighting, but after they were engulfed by his light, they finally found peace. "It's okay now. I'll end your suffering." With that, he suddenly lunged forward, thrusting the blunt-looking -but very capable of cutting demons- blade toward the demon girl's chest with both hands.

Noa’s even-tempered gaze fell on the soldier in white. For his words, as lovely as they may sound, seemed fundamentally flawed to the Festerhilde. As his large sword came around, a flash of bright green would engulf Festerhilde’s hand and it took shape. Meanwhile, the soldier’s blade clashed with that of the temporary noble’s short bow but instead of pushing against it, Noa allowed it to help her slide backwards a few inches before she lunged even closer to the white haired soldier until they could look eye to eye.

“…. And who are you to do such a thing?” Three earthen clones outside the dome crumbled, leaving only four more to scout yet one of them began to mutate. Expecting the lost boy to dodge backwards, she set a large wall sprouted up behind him. “As cruel as Fate may seem, it is merely preparing us to meet our destinies.” It was only then that Noa would try to use her magically enhanced strength to riposte the boy’s broadsword but all it did was phase through his blade leaving her completely open to sliced in half.

“Wha…!” The Earth shifted to move Noa out of the way but not before she felt something warm phase through her waist. Instinctively gripping her waist, Noa would backflip to gain distance and once she found herself at a respectable distance from the soldier, she realized that she wasn’t in any pain. With a quick downward glance, Noa realized that there was no wound and her garb was completely fine.

“What sort of spell is this?” Festerhilde remained apprehensive, and equally bewildered – not simply because she was sure that she was hit but that a Crux member would attack her even in her true form. This could very well be an effect of Aphelion. It seems the situation was worse than Noa thought. If Aphelion can affect not only normal humans with sillage but members of the Crux as well then it would she wondered if that little Aries is behaving himself.

Melchior was taken aback when the demon slid closer to him instead of running away. It wasn't her cryptic words that disturbed him, but the fact that he didn't feel anything. Usually being so close to a living demon felt awful to him, but that wasn't the case here. What did it mean?

He was quick to catch on to the woman's movement and stop thinking entirely when she attempted to counter. Since the weapon wasn't a bellicosa or demonic, it couldn't interact with his own. Melchior immediately took the opening and attempted to slice through the demon at her waist after his weapon phased through his, darting forward -and right through her- at the same time.

When he realized what had just happened, Melchior stopped in his tracks, shaking. Now he knew why it was he could get close to her without hurting. She was...a human? Or whatever she was, she wasn't a demon or sin. She wasn't someone he should be attacking. But then, why had he thought that? He was absolutely sure he'd felt a demonic presence inside the dome. His powers didn't just malfunction like that. This didn't make any sense.

Melchior's sword clattered to the ground and then disappeared as he slowly turned to face the woman, looking panicked. He couldn't believe he had just attacked a human! He'd never done this before! At least not by accident. Did it have something to do with the Aphelion? No, it didn't affect bellicosa. He'd know if it did. "I...I'm so sorry. I thought..." He trailed off, staring blankly at the ground. Now he didn't trust his own senses. It wasn't like he'd actually hurt anyone if he did attack a human by mistake, but he still felt guilty over his previous intentions.

Festerhilde's eyes continued to inspect the boy and found true sincerity in his words. It was then words from Kova rang true in this very moment. That there were soldier's among them with good intentions, not that Festerhilde had any doubt however.

It was just nice to see that returning to this form allowed the noble one more room for negotiation. With her weapon dissolving to crumbled soil, Festerhilde approached the boy whose eyes were filled with such uncertainty and ever so gently placed a hand on his shoulder with a smile.

"Your instincts art not false. Indeed, calamity does reside here with me but not in the manner which you assumed." And on queue a twisted orchestra of screams and agony was heard from the outside of the dome and then a single gargantuan fist coated in scorching magma came crashing through the dome, fire scorching the dome and reduced it to crumbling earth.

It was then on the outside, Ravanar, now a world of true hell with magma and fire consuming houses near and wide. Thankfully, the clones did their job and forced all nearby civilians to a safe distance so that Festerhilde may deal with the hulking humanoid lion-like abomination before her with a mane, elongated tongue made of scorching lava.

It's body seemed to be breaking apart and reforming as it towers over the houses and buildings to fill the streets with nothing but destruction and despair where not even the rats, the roaches, the crows or any of the vermin could survive. Festerhilde then uses her magic to create strong floating platforms for herself and the boy so they may survive the rushing lava. Seeing this, the creature ushered one word in a deep, watery screech.

"FEEEESSSSSSTEEEEEERRRRRHHIIIIILLLLDDDEEEE!!! WWWOOOOORRRRRLLLLD MIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE!!!"

Calmly, Festerhilde would place her hand over her head in embarrassment but still speak loudly enough so the boy and the beast can hear. "We have been over this Noa. The world doesn't belong to you." The response warranted a bellowing roar from the abomination. The noble would then look to the white-haired boy again. "Assist me, if you would, in taming this old flame."

Melchior slowly looked up when the girl approached and put her hand on his shoulder. He didn't expect to see her smiling. Shouldn't she be angry? He had just attacked her seemingly for no reason. Nothing that was happening tonight made any sense -neither his malfunction or her behavior.

"I don't--" Melchior's words were cut off by the cacophony of screeching that sounded from somewhere outside. Really, it sounded like it was everywhere. It was so loud! Normally, Melchior's first instinct would be to cover his ears, but there was something outside that attracted him. As if on cue, that something bashed through the dome.

Even as heat engulfed him and lava flooded the area, Melchior couldn't stop staring at the obviously malicious creature outside. That was what he'd been drawn here by. He didn't know why he'd thought it was inside the dome, but it didn't matter now.

Melchior was startled when he suddenly started to rise skyward, but when he realized the purpose of the earthen slab, he immediately turned his attention back to the demon that was now screechinging about something else he didn't understand. Even if he did know what the thing was talking about, he wouldn't care. All that mattered now was stopping the screaming. He could feel the suffering. It burned him the closer the beast came.

Needless to say, the human girl didn't have to ask him twice. Melchior's sword reformed and he leapt toward the demon with the oversized weapon raised above his head, which he later aimed to slam into the beasts' forehead. Even if he couldn't cut the large demon, he knew that whatever his blade touched would begin to purify, and from there he could just maintain contact to eventually cleanse the world of this mass of pain and suffering.

Seeing the boy quite literally leap into action the vigilant Festerhilde chuckle thoughtfully to her. “Dear oh dear…” The blade of the Crux soldier managed to slightly graze the forehead of molten monstrosity who would very quickly retaliate with an roar so powerful it seared the air and could force all within it’s vicinity to be blown away.

Luckily, Festerhilde had prepared a large golem hand bounded together to hopefully catch his fall if need be. Lava continued to envelope the city of Ravanar at an alarming rate. “Hm…” With a wave of her hand, the ground began to shake, as a large wall of reinforced rock would be erected in an attempt to keep the flow of lava from spreading any further than the city.

As she glanced at the small scab of purified stone where the soldier’s blade had left it’s mark. That looks like some sort of cleansing mark. “Pale one, halted the creature must be for thine own benefit.” Finally hearing her changing speech pattern, the masked Festerhilde’s lips curved downward. “If my power thine need’st for such a task. I shall assist thee - given time I fear.” Festerhilde informed. The beast opened it’s mouth as more molten rock poured down from it’s gaping maw and with it spawned smaller winged monstrosities that bore the frightening face of a weeping little girl and the body of a lion.

Scores of them took to the skies to attack the two that stood in Noa’s way. Seeing such caused Noa to create a thin, light green barrier of sillage to aid in his endurance while trying to keep him afloat. The screeching and weeping Manticores siege had brought a barrage of teeth, magma and claws toward our heroes wake as Festerhilde spoke. Hopefully the Soldier would be able to heed and act on Festerhilde’s word or this battle may take longer than it should.

Melchior only managed to graze the demon before he was forced back by the sheer force of its roar. He reached out toward the monster, vainly trying to resist the power even though he was already falling. He didn't care about the fact that he might be about to land in a sea of fire, but luckily, he landed on something hard instead. The Hallowed briefly looked down to see that a hand made of rock had caught him.

"Thanks!" he called up to the girl who already seemed to be accomplishing much more than he was. She was doing her best to keep the citizens of Ravanar safe and limit the damage while all he could do was focus on the demon. It wasn't very Cross-like of him, but he couldn't help but obey his purpose.

Melchior was about to fling himself at the monster again, but the girl's words caught his attention. He understood that she was asking for his help again. Was it because he wasn't doing a good job so far? "Don't worry. I will take care of it," he attempted to reassure her, smiling. He wasn't sure he could actually purify a demon like this, but he was obligated to try. Even if it took a while, he was sure he could do it.

As if to mock the Hallowed's words, the creature then spewed more lava. Smaller versions of itself flew out unexpectedly and Melchior was forced to defend. He couldn't fend off so many threats at once using just his sword. Claws tore at him for a couple seconds before he let his power out in the form of a blanketing white aura that reached out toward all the demons -the large one included. Anything caught by it would be slowly purified, and it was with this that Melchior tried to settle things quickly, swallowing everything in a soft white glow.
