Practice of Sedition
In a world built upon a foundation of conflict, the past year has been notably violent. As Crux Fidelis, the Crusaders and ruling faction of Sium, suffer heavy losses from a particularly bloody Aphelion, other factions are emboldened to take action. Despite being allies, Weltschmerz's ambitious and duplicitous nature sees them taking bigger risks which threaten to break their alliance. All the while, Apocrypha continues to gain public sympathy and support while the Black Sun Cabal and Poena Damni continue to wreak havoc. As Sium races towards yet another conflict, it’s evident that a war lurks on the horizon.

- A vast collection of bruises -- some old, some new -- pockmark her body. Prizes of hard-fought battles. Marks of defeat. Discerning their origins has become an impossible task.

- There are small patches of burnt skin that have long healed over her knees. Always watch for the coals.
- An old iron dagger. The tip is starting to rust and the sharp side is chipped in places. By all accounts, it's a weapon past its prime. However, discarding it would be a terrible waste...

- A very fat, very lazy grey rat. Grey rats are one of the most intelligent rodents in the world, this one is the exception to the rule. To be fair, it looked fierce when she adopted it. Unfortunately, when it isn't eating, it's lazing about uselessly in the comfort of her satchel.
- Communication with animals is considered a valuable skill among sillage-users, but she seemed to have lucked out with it. Animals can understand her, but she finds it difficult to make sense of their "language," and as far as she knows, they refuse to obey any commands unconditionally.
personality/fun facts
Longshanks is a girl who was forced to grow up quickly in order to survive. Survival hinged on her wits, of which she had plenty; and pragmatic action, of which she learned the hard way. Unwilling to trust, she finds solace in the silence and the shadows where everything can be observed and monitored safely. Safety is what she cherishes; safety from clenched fists, safety from the silhouettes of monsters, safety from hardship and heartbreak. She is still a child, no matter how fervently she runs from that terrible truth. Child-like immaturity and wonder at the vast world now open to her are clashing with instincts cultivated on grimy streets of disreputable men.

At least there are animals, they've never wronged her.
Ravanar is a city of vice and irresponsibility, and the conception of a child is a threat to that freedom. Thus, newborns of Ravanar are the children of nobody and heirs of nothing. Without protection, most of them perish, but a select few defied their unjust fate and eked out a living through their sillage. The Bottleneck Boys were one such group; a ragtag gang of misfits whose claim to fame lay in being able to squeeze into spaces fit for mice and clean out the homes of rotten adults. They were also boys if that wasn't readily apparent.

One night after a daring heist, they happened upon a baby, whom they wished was a boy, but discovered was a girl. Whether it was the high of success, charity, or a defiant gesture towards loathsome grownups who refused to raise them, the girl was inducted into their ranks as an honorary Bottleneck Boy (Girl). First, she learned to crawl through the tight spaces between alleys, then she walked the narrow clotheslines connecting rooftops, and lastly she ran through the maze-like streets whenever a mark sought to take back his stolen goods. Through their escapades, she earned the nickname Girl; the gang wasn't quite as creative with names as they were with burglaries.

Over the years, members of the gang came and went. Sometimes they weren't quick enough to evade grasping hands, or they wanted to start gangs of their own, but the most common departures came from boys who grew too tall. In time, this happened to her, and what was meant to be an amicable farewell turned sour, as she was not comfortable being cast out from the only family she had ever known. In response, she was derisively dubbed "Longshanks," a catch-all term for a tall person. As much as she wanted to stay, she earned her namesake when the gang slipped through a crawlspace that was much too cramped for her.

Fortunately, they were not entirely without mercy. A cut from their last haul was left in her coin purse out of respect, and Longshanks decided then and there to escape the wretched city which never truly felt like home. The coin was spent on supplies, and passage out was "earned" by slipping aboard an airship unnoticed. This proved to be a mistake.

The captain discovered her within the evening and revealed that his crew was a band of notorious sky pirates. Despite her numerous curses and threats to violence, he was not dissuaded from offering her a choice: join up with his crew, or be thrown off the ship.

Longshanks chose the first option.
